Why Is Gratitude So Important in Personal Growth?

There are so many ways for us to invest in our personal growth these days. Why is gratitude important in personal growth? As someone who has invested tens of thousands of dollars in the past decade in personal growth, I’d love to share my personal perspective with you.

Why Personal Growth?

Let’s start here. What are the benefits of investing in our personal growth? One of my favorite mentors is Jim Rohn, and he explains it with this quote, ‘The major value in life is not what you get. The major value in life is what you become.’ We all have goals and dreams and without an investment in our personal growth, these goals and dreams will always remain just out of our reach. In order to achieve success, we have to become a successful person. Personal growth is the best path to get us there.

How Do We Invest in Our Personal Growth?

The options are truly unlimited when it comes to investing in personal growth. This can be a challenge if we don’t know where to start. Here are few ideas that are free or cost almost nothing (except your time):

  1. Start at your local library. You can borrow books, audiobooks, eBooks for free and begin your journey. I recommend starting with some of the classics, such as Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill or The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership by John Maxwell.
  2. Podcasts. Another amazing free option that has thousands and thousands of choices. We are very blessed to live in a time when successful people are open and willing to share their journey with us (for free!). One of my favorites right now is the Tim Ferriss Show, since Ferriss ‘deconstructs world-class performers from eclectic areas’. There is so much to learn from these interviews!
  3. Reach out to a local mentor. For example, you want to have a successful yoga studio? Connect with the owner of your local studio and offer to take them out for lunch. Ask them your questions and then listen carefully to their answers. Take good notes and use them to start your own plan. Create a relationship focused on collaboration, rather than competition.
  4. YouTube videos. There is a lot of great content on YouTube and it can be difficult know where to start. I recommend starting with Marie Forleo, whether you are an entrepreneur or not, she has amazing interviews and Q&A Tuesday.

Where Does Gratitude Fit In?

First, I’d start with gratitude that we live in an age where we can take the time to invest in personal development. Not too long ago in our human history, this kind of behavior would not be possible. There wasn’t the time or the disposable income to invest in this way.

Next, focus on gratitude for the abundance of options to choose from, many that are free or cost very little. It may seem overwhelming to have so many choices however this also means that we can be more specific in the kind of learning we’d like to do.

And finally, let’s express gratitude for all of the mentors and successful people that have come before us. More specifically, we are grateful for those who are willing to share their knowledge with us so that we can all learn. We have grown and evolved as a society partly because there is more and more free sharing of information. Instead of the old adage every woman for herself, there’s a global shift going on. Together, we are more powerful than the sum each part.

What are you going to do today to invest in your personal development? And how will you express your gratitude at the same time?
